Transshipment Facility

Lorain Pellet Terminal
The Lorain Pellet Terminal (LPT), located in Lorain, Ohio, 35 miles west of Cleveland, is a division of LTV. This unique taconite pellet transshipment facility was designed to accommodate all sizes of conventional self- unloading vessels, including the mammoth 1,000-foot ore carriers in the 60,000-ton class.

The facility's strategic location on the southern shore of Lake Erie minimizes transit time of vessels bound for Lake Erie ports from the upper Great Lakes. The LPT co-exists with thriving recreational boating.

The Lorain Pellet Terminal's stationary vessel loader can load 20,000-ton, river-size shuttle vessels at 5,000 tons per hour. In addition to self-unloading vessels, the LPT is equipped to handle self-unloading tug barges. Both methods of transportation are used to deliver pellets to LTV Steel's Cleveland Works.

The terminal covers 58 acres of land and has a total storage capacity of 550,000 tons. Pellets are kept separate in four different piles using movable partitions to maintain the integrity and quality of the various grades.
