Tin Mill Products Plants

LTV Steel's tin mills are located at Indiana Harbor Works in East Chicago, Indiana, and Aliquippa, Pennsylvania.

The tin mills produce black plate, tin plate, tin-free steel and tin-coated sheet, used by customers to manufacture food cans, aerosol cans, bottle crowns and closures, paint cans, pails, and other types of containers.

Tin mill products also are used in automobile oil filters, fasteners, trays, utility sheds, swimming pool panels, film magazines, commercial ceiling grid systems, tubing, battery cases, curtain rods, toys, shelving, air cleaners, and other products.

The six-stand tandem mill at the Indiana Harbor Tin Mill was upgraded with gauge control enhancements to furnish a center line strip tolerance within plus or minus 1% and an area tolerance within plus or minus 3%. Tight gauge control is imperative for two-piece drawn and wall ironed (DWI) cans, welded can bodies and other nonpackaging end uses such as OD tubing.

At the Aliquippa Tin Mill, a new hydrogen batch annealing process provides 72-inch OD and 40,000-pound coil capability. This improvement represents the first of its kind for tin products. Benefits of the new batch annealing process include larger single coil weights for in-house processing, closer control of physical characteristics of the steel and fewer welds.
