Total compliance with all applicable environmental laws and regulations is LTV Steel's minimum standard of environmental performance. We are continuously investigating and using technologically-proven systems and methods to improve our control systems. Since 1985, we have spent $262 million in capital investments dedicated to environmental control or compliance.

Here are a few examples of our efforts:

Chemical Release Reduction
In accordance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) policy, LTV Steel plants have reduced chemical releases to the air by 88%, to the water by 79%, and to the land by 59% since reporting began in 1988.

33/50 Program
In 1991, LTV Steel voluntarily agreed to reduce the release of 17 chemicals targeted by the EPA. The Company committed to achieve a 33% reduction by 1992 and a 50% reduction by 1995, compared with 1988 levels. By 1995 (the year the program ended), LTV Steel had achieved reductions of 88%. This accomplishment led to LTV receiving a Hammer Award from Vice President Albert Gore.

Energy Consumption
During the past 15 years, LTV has dramatically improved the energy efficiency of its steelmaking operations, reducing energy consumption by 33% since 1980.

Recycling
LTV Steel is committed to recycling steel scrap and materials related to the steel industry. Annually we recycle more than two million tons of steel scrap. We also actively support community-based recycling programs and follow a policy to preferentially purchase items made of recycled materials when they meet our quality and cost standards. LTV Steel is one of the founders of the Ohio Buy Recycled Business Alliance.
